How Kealon Barlow’s commitment to continuous learning is shaping the future of ECA.

For Kealon Barlow, growth has never been about collecting titles or checking off accomplishments.

It’s about refusing to settle.

“I always have to keep moving,” he said. “If I get complacent, I’m just not happy.”

That simple philosophy has guided every stage of his career, from starting as a young apprentice fresh out of high school to becoming a Master Technician and recently earning one of the most respected credentials in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry: the Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification through BICSI.

While the certification is a remarkable achievement, those who know Kealon best would tell you that what makes him exceptional isn’t the letters after his name. It’s the mindset behind them, and the heart behind everything he does.

A Career Built on Purpose and a Decision That Changed Everything

Kealon’s path into the electrical industry wasn’t perfectly linear, but every step along the way was shaped by intention, responsibility, and a deep commitment to providing for his family.

He began in a traditional electrical apprenticeship before discovering a passion for low-voltage systems. After gaining experience with several contractors, he spent six years working in the non-union sector building skills, gaining exposure, and learning the trade from the ground up.

But as his life grew beyond just himself, so did his perspective.

“I started having kids,” Kealon said. “And I realized I needed better benefits so I could take care of my family.”

That realization wasn’t just a career decision, it was a turning point rooted in love, responsibility, and sacrifice.

Choosing to join IBEW Local 124 in 2014 meant starting a new chapter. It meant stepping into a union apprenticeship, committing to continued learning, and aligning himself with a system that would better support his family long-term.

For Kealon, it was one of the most important decisions of his life. Not because it changed his job, but because it changed his future.

It gave him stability. It gave him support. And it gave him the ability to keep growing without compromising the people who mattered most.

That path eventually led him to Heartland, where he worked under Aaron Harrison, before joining ECA as part of the acquisition.

Looking back, Kealon sees every step of his journey, apprenticeship, technician, non-union, and union as part of a larger story of growth, responsibility, and perseverance.

A Career Built on Curiosity & Character

At ECA, Kealon quickly noticed something different.

“Before, we were focused on the work directly in front of us,” he explained. “Here, you can see where we’re going. There’s opportunity to grow, opportunity to look ahead, and everyone knows where the company is headed.”

That clarity and openness didn’t just change how he worked, it changed how he led.

The culture at ECA reinforced something Kealon had already been living out: knowledge is meant to be shared, not guarded.

“The openness here is different,” he said. “Everyone communicates. Everyone shares what they know. Nothing feels hidden behind closed doors.”

That environment naturally aligns with ECA’s value of team-driven success, where progress doesn’t happen in isolation, but through collaboration, trust, and shared knowledge.

And Kealon embraced that fully.

He became the kind of technician who doesn’t just complete the job but elevates everyone around him while doing it.

The Highest Standard & the Work Behind It

Kealon has never been satisfied staying in one place professionally. After earning additional certifications and advancing to Master Technician status, he set his sights on the RCDD. A credential widely recognized as one of the highest standards in the low-voltage industry.

It wasn’t a quick achievement. It was a long commitment.

For nearly a year and a half, Kealon spent countless evenings studying after work, often waiting until his two children were asleep before opening books filled with hundreds upon hundreds of pages of technical standards.

“It would be eleven o’clock at night,” he laughed. “I’d just be sitting there reading standards and numbers.”

There were nights of exhaustion. Moments of doubt. And times when the finish line felt far away.

But he kept going.

Eventually, his wife encouraged him to stop waiting until he felt “ready” and trust the work he had already put in.

He passed the exam on his first attempt.

“It taught me that I can do hard things.”

But more than that, it showed everyone around him what perseverance looks like when no one is watching.

Success That Multiplies

For many people, earning an industry-leading certification becomes a personal milestone.

For Kealon, it became a reflection of something deeper, a commitment to excellence in every detail.

One of the first things he thought about wasn’t what the certification meant for him, but what it could do for others.

“I’ve gained a lot of knowledge that I can share with the guys I’m working with.”

That mindset is what sets him apart.

Aaron Harrison has seen it firsthand.

“Every apprentice who’s worked with Kealon tells me they’ve learned more working with him,” Aaron said. “He doesn’t keep the difficult work to himself. He teaches people. He helps grow everyone around him.”

Kealon doesn’t just train people, he invests in them. He believes in them. He pushes them to see what they’re capable of, and he holds the work itself to a higher standard in the process.

Because for Kealon, excellence isn’t just something you achieve once, it’s something you demonstrate in every detail, every day.

And in doing so, he multiplies his impact far beyond his own work.

Leading Through Example

Aaron remembers early on handing Kealon increasingly difficult projects.

“I’d tell him, ‘This one’s yours. Run it.'”

And Kealon always did.

“He never faltered,” Aaron said. “If something difficult came along, we’d put him on it. We wouldn’t hear complaints. We’d just hear, ‘What’s next?'”

That steady, humble, and relentless attitude has earned him respect across the organization.

Not because he demands attention, but because he consistently delivers excellence while lifting others with him.

Aaron believes that is where Kealon’s true legacy will be built.

“I think his biggest influence will be on our people. He’s genuine. He cares about people, and he’s going to help us develop them.”

Never Standing Still

Even after achieving one of the industry’s highest certifications, Kealon isn’t finished learning.

He’s already planning to pursue BICSI’s Data Center Design certification and continue advancing his NICET fire alarm certifications.

For him, learning isn’t something you complete.

It’s something you live.

When asked what advice he’d give someone considering the same journey, his answer is simple, but powerful.

“Take your time. Don’t rush it.”

Its advice shaped by experience, sacrifice, and a deep understanding that meaningful growth is built, not rushed.
